History

&nbsp;

Between 1958 and 1961 seven new&nbsp;plate glass universities&nbsp;were announced including Lancaster. The choice of Lancaster as the site of the fourth new university was announced on 23 November 1961 in a written answer in the&nbsp;House of Commons.

The university was established by&nbsp;royal charter&nbsp;in 1964. The charter stipulated that&nbsp;Princess Alexandra of Kent&nbsp;be the first&nbsp;chancellor. She was inaugurated in 1964.The ceremony also saw the granting of various honorary degrees to dignitaries including the Prime Minister,&nbsp;Harold Wilson. Princess Alexandra retired as chancellor in 2004 and was the longest serving chancellor of any British university. On her departure, she gave approval for the Chancellor&#39;s Medal to be awarded for academic merit to the highest-performing undergraduates and postgraduates. Each year presentations are made to up to five graduates of taught masters&#39; courses and up to six to the highest-performing undergraduates.

Most postgraduates will live in single-study accommodation within the Graduate College, which is located on Alexandra Park (south-west campus). Other single/shared flats, as well as our couple and family accommodation, is located around the wider campus. As a postgraduate though, wherever you live you are a member of the Graduate College and have access to all postgraduate facilities.

All full time undergraduate applications should be made through the&nbsp;UCAS&nbsp;website using UCAS Apply. You will submit one UCAS application for all the universities that you are applying to.

As part of the application, you will need to enter your personal details, previous and current qualifications, an academic reference, and a personal statement. The UCAS website provides helpful tips and videos that explain in detail the information required for each section of the application.

The Accommodation team can help you with issues relating to on and off campus accommodation.

Lancaster University has nine college bars, five caf&eacute;s and restaurants and numerous other food outlets.

The Estates Development team manages new building and refurbishment projects to improve Lancaster University&#39;s facilities.

The Estates Operations team are responsible for the development and integrated operational delivery of all engineering, maintenance, utilities and facilities services.

The University provides a team of trained Security Officers, working shifts to cover 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Internships

All current Science and Technology students and recent graduates can apply for relevant paid work experience through the Faculty of Science and Technology Internship Programme.

We provide full-time 2-3 month summer internship opportunities from July to September. These are normally advertised and recruited between February and June each year. Part-time internships of varying durations are available all year round.

There are no legal restrictions on the number of hours UK and European Economic Area (EEA) students aged 18 or over can work while studying. However, Lancaster University recommends no more than 10 to 15 hours a week during term time. This figure aims to balance financial need and academic workload, so it is not advisable to exceed this limit.
