The University of Connecticut was founded in 1881 and is a public research University. Initially called Storrs Agricultural School, the university eventually became a land grant college in 1893. After the name of the institution was changed to the University of Connecticut in 1939 courses such as social work and nursing programs were introduced. Today there are over 24,000 undergraduates enrolled in the college.

The merit scholarships offered by the University of Connecticut are renewable. Almost all of the scholarships are offered to the students as soon as they enroll in the university. The Day of Pride and Nutmeg scholarships will require counselor nomination. Most of the merit scholarships are awarded during the fall semester.
