There are six autonomous universities, namely National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Management University, Singapore University of Technology and Design, Singapore Institute of Technology and Singapore University of Social Sciences. These universities are highly ranked in the country and globally, and have high entry requirements and scholarship opportunities.
These public universities are funded by the Government and open to foreign and Singaporean students. These universities are small but offer multiple disciplines and degrees.
Singaporean polytechnics are specialized institutions that offer professional and industry-oriented programs. They provide 3-year Diploma courses in various disciplines, which include mass communication, business studies, accountancy, tourism and hospitality management, and biotechnology, as well as specialized courses such as marine engineering, optometry, aeronautical studies, and nursing.
Polytechnics are the best choice for students looking for industrial immersion and project-based learning. There are five polytechnics in Singapore, including Nanyang Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, and Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
Private Education Institutions (PEIs):
The private education institutions (PEIs) in Singapore are regulated by the Committee for Private Education (CPE), earlier known as the Council for Private Education. It is an agency under the Skills Future Singapore (SSG) and was earlier a statutory board under the Ministry of Education of Singapore (MOE).
Singaporean private education institutions are only allowed to offer courses which have been permitted by CPE. The EduTrust Certification Scheme evaluates a PEI’s school governance and administration, academic and financial processes, quality management, welfare and protection of students through fee protection. The 4-year EduTrust award is granted to a private educational institute for its good performance in areas such as the provision of educational services and management.
PEIs issue certificates and award qualifications including an Advanced Diploma. They are preferred by professionals and adult learners because of their flexible learning approach.
Foreign institutions in Singapore are universities from other countries that have set up their campuses in Singapore, as per the guidelines set by the Ministry of Education (MOE). Some of the top foreign institutes in Singapore include Digipen Institute of Technology, SP Jain School of Global Management, German Institute of Science & Technology, TUM ASIA and INSEAD. These foreign universities offer both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Unlike the local institutes, these universities have a smaller number of students.
