Birkbeck is a part of the world famous University of London and was established in 1823. It was founded by Sir George Birkbeck, and its supporters, also in the early days it was called London Mechanics' Institute. The name it's known by now was given to it in 2002. The college was granted £5 million in 2006 for expansion by the Higher Education Funding Council for England.
