Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) began with the establishment of the first technical education institution in Ireland named the City of Dublin Technical Schools back in 1887. Over time, other specialized colleges opened.

In 1978, the College of Technology along with 5 other institutions formed a federation of colleges named Dublin Institute of Technology. Then, in 1992, DIT was established by legislation as a single institution under the Dublin Institute of Technology Act. DIT also got Degree-awarding power in 1998 under this act.

Later in 2003, DIT was awarded Professorship and in 2018, it was approved as a University and then was launched on 1 January 2019 as Technological University Dublin.
