Overview
The university was founded in 1882 with the name Benjamin P. Cheney Academy 1882. In 1890, it was renamed the State Normal School at Cheney to train elementary school teachers. The first class of teachers began studying on October 13, 1890. The campus was destroyed twice in 1891 and 1912 and was rebuilt each time.
