Laurentian University, or Université Laurentienne in French, is a bilingual university located in Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The university began as the Collège du Sacré-Coeur, under the supervision of the Roman-Catholic church. In 1957, the college changed to the University of Sudbury and began awarding degrees to its students. 
Laurentian University as we know it was established in 1960 and used the campus of the University of Sudbury to take classes until its own campus was constructed four years later. Today, Laurentian University is the largest bilingual university in Canada which offers distance education programs. Facts: 1. The university offers on-campus residence in five different buildings, all located on the main campus. 2. The university’s radio station, CKLU-FM, broadcasts their programs in both English and French. 3. The university runs newspapers in both English and French language that are called Lambda and L'Orignal déchaîné respectively. 4. Along with Lakehead University, Laurentian University formed the Northern Ontario Medical School. 5. The university is a member of L'Association des universités de la francophonie canadienne (the association of universities of Canadian Francophonie).

On-campus facilities: On-campus residence is available for all the students enrolled in Laurentian University. Once you register yourself and your place is confirmed as a resident, you will be sent an information package before the date of your arrival. As a resident, students would get laundry facilities, exercise facilities, access to a Theatre room, Games Room, Garbage and Recycling rooms, Computer rooms and Study rooms. Off-campus facilities: For students who want to opt for off-campus accommodation or have missed the deadline to apply for on-campus residence, many private renting options are available. Depending upon the type of place you pick and the living arrangements you choose, the cost of renting would fall somewhere between $641.00 and $1218.00 CDN per month, which may or may not include utilities. The university website has provided links to many property websites that can help you find a place to live. Food facilities (Availability of vegetarian/Indian food): Locating Indian restaurants becomes more of a necessity when you are planning to spend years away from home. You would be relieved to know that several Indian restaurants are located in the vicinity of the campus. A short drive would take you to restaurants like Tandoori Tastes and Taj Bistro that offer both dine-in and takeaway options.

Ben Avery is the sports building which holds an Olympic size swimming pool, squash courts, track, rock-climbing wall, and basketball courts. Students also write exams in the Ben Avery Varsity Gym. There is also a private beach owned by the university. Campus safety: Security guards are available on-campus for assistance 24/7, all year long. There is a male and female guard present and the Security Control Centre (SCC) can be reached by the students in case of emergencies. Memorial Park and Bell Park are places to go if you want to walk along with nature and find a nice and quiet place to relax. Science North and Dynamic Earth are both science museums you can check out for an informative day. The Fielding Bird Sanctuary is another great place to get acquainted with Canada’s natural side. Crime rate: Sudbury’s overall crime rate is 63.01 which is classified as high. Depending upon the type of criminal offense, the crime rates vary from moderate to high. A review of crime statistics show an 18.5% increase in the number of reported crimes in 2017. You should do more research on the crime statistics of the city before you make any final decisions. Nearby Airports: The nearest domestic airport is just a half hour drive away. Greater Sudbury Airport will take you anywhere you want to go in Canada and would be a great choice if you are planning any college trips. The nearest international airport is the Toronto Pearson International Airport, nearly four hours away. Nearby Subways and train stations: The Sudbury station is the nearest train station, located 8 minutes away from the campus. Internships: Under Laurentian University’s French-language Honours Bachelor of Commerce program, students are offered a co-operative education option.
