Otago Polytechnic originally was a training school (Dunedin Technical School) which used to provide evening classes to working people. Later on it expanded to offer day school for high school students. The name was changed to King Edward Technical College. The King Edward technical college got split in a secondary school and Otago polytechnic.(1 February 1966).
