The University of Auckland started out as a constituent college of the University of New Zealand on 23 May 1883. It was initially named Auckland University College and its campus was in a disused courthouse.&nbsp; 
In 1901 the total student strength rose to 156 and the majority were enrolled in law clerks or teachers courses.
