On February 28, 1877, the University of Manitoba was established. It began as a federation of three existing colleges, St. Boniface College, St. John's College, and Manitoba College, and eventually grew to include a number more institutions. In 1880, the University acquired its first-degree bearer, and in 1886, it welcomed its first female student.

The International Undergraduate Student Entrance Scholarship was established to honour academic excellence among international students enrolling at the University of Manitoba after graduating from international high schools.
The fellowship, valued at CAD 10,000, is named for a former vice-president and treasurer of The Great-West Life Assurance Company in Winnipeg.
