Australia Awards Scholarships are long-term awards administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. They provide opportunities for people from developing countries, particularly those countries located in the Indo-Pacific region, to undertake full time undergraduate or postgraduate study at participating Australian universities.

Australia Awards

A richness of resources in Australia have seen it be a significant energy exporter to other nations. For instance, in 2021, natural gas (LNG) exports from Australia were $50 billion AUD. Increasingly though, many countries are transitioning away from fossil-fuel derived energy sources to sustainable alternatives, such as renewable hydrogen, however they do not necessarily have the capacity to do so. The opportunity exists for Australia to remain a strong energy exporter by contributing to the expansion of renewable (solar) hydrogen into the global energy market.

There is considerable interest in producing H2 from electrochemical water splitting in a feasible yet sustainable way for worldwide distribution. While water is a renewable and abundant resource, its use as a H2 source is relatively energy intensive (>4.5 kWh mH2-3), is subject to competing uses (e.g., drinking water, agriculture) and is reasonably costly (i.e., the water oxidation reaction is sluggish). Consequently, a strong drive exists to develop unique approaches to overcome these challenges, such as using a waste organic stream in place of water for the electrolyser or as a feedstock for photocatalytic systems.

Waste streams containing organics originate from many different processes. Using these organic-containing waste streams as a H2 source has distinct advantages, from economic to energy benefits. As the organics are a waste, they are very low cost, and in terms of electrochemistry, generally have a very low standard oxidation potential (< 0.2V) compared to water oxidation (1.23V). Further, organic oxidation using electrochemical and photocatalytic strategies is selective and scalable, delivers zero/minimal CO2 emissions and has the added advantage of potentially producing value-added organic products from the process.

The Particles and Catalysis Research Group (PartCat) has developed two prototype systems, based on electrocatalytic and photocatalytic concepts, which can generate renewable hydrogen using only sunlight and a waste organic stream. In collaboration with Rio Tinto, through the Trailblazer Universities Program, two PhD projects will establish the capacity of the two prototype systems for recovering clean hydrogen from organic waste streams in remote communities.

Hydrogen Value Chain - Solar Reforming of Waste Organics For Clean Hydrogen Production

To enable the transition to renewable energy, large scale energy storage systems are required. The vanadium flow battery (VFB) is a leading technology for storing large amounts of energy efficiently and safely while being cost effective. Commercial scale VFB systems from various manufacturers are currently being deployment across the globe.

With the support of the Commonwealth Government Trailblazer program and Rio Tinto, this project will initially explore the advantages of utilising energy storage systems for storing of renewable energy at various off grid mine sites and remote towns. Further leading-edge research will focus on advancing component and system design aspects of the VFB technology to achieve higher power and energy densities to further increase the VFB performance. You will have access to advanced in-house manufacturing facilities and state of the art electrochemical research laboratories for testing and validation of the design improvements. In addition, you will gain industry experience in energy storage systems by taking part in industrial site visits and through regular contact with Rio Tinto engineers.

Development of High Power Vanadium Flow Batteries

The UNSW Tuition Fee Scholarship (TFS) aims to support you during your higher degree research candidature at UNSW by covering your tuition fees. This scholarship is normally offered in conjunction with a Faculty or School funded living allowance. There are three application rounds per year.

Combustible building cladding represents a significant safety risk in densely populated urban areas and regions prone to bushfires. Conventional fire safety strategies reliant on limiting vertical fire spread through compartmentation have been challenged by the emergence of novel materials with limited understanding of fire risk. These emerging composite panels, comprised of metal oxides, hydroxides and carbonates, are receiving focused attention. Additionally, deriving the construction materials from low carbon waste sources, aligning the built environment with a circular economy framework, is increasingly becoming a requirement.
Our Industry Partner, EcoMag Ltd has developed a propriety process for recovering high purity magnesium compounds from a Mg-rich waste brine stream. The PhD project will examine the capacity of these magnesium compounds as the foundation of high-performance building cladding composite materials, integrating both carbon capture and utilisation and agri-waste strategies into the process.

High-Performance Magnesium Hydroxide Polymer Composites For Low Carbon Footprint, Fire-Resistant Construction Materials

Work with large-scale linked national health datasets to develop novel evidence for primary care and policy makers.
This project will help eliminate cervical cancer fairly in Australia by reducing barriers to access proven cervical cancer prevention services in primary health care. We will focus on five community groups who exhibit an unacceptably high burden from cervical cancer:

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
people with disability
people with socioeconomic disadvantage
people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
people living in rural areas.
We will build a new digital health tool using existing, linked national data and translate the evidence generated by the tool to improved clinical practices, educational resources, national policies, and outcomes for patients.

The Include Study: Cervical Cancer Prevention For All

Up to two PhD scholarships equivalent to the Australian Government's RTP (Research Training Program) are available for domestic and international students on power electronics defined power systems and the control of inverter based resources for power oscillation damping and enhancement of power system stability. The project(s) are funded by the ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centre.

The project will involve:

Identification of Power System Oscillation modes and their damping through inverter based resources (Solar / Wind / BESS)
Interactions of Power Electronics converters in Power systems.
Stability analysis of power systems with power electronics converters.

The continuous increase in energy conversion efficiency and decrease in cost have made solar power the cheapest form of electricity in most countries. As a result, silicon-based solar cell technologies are dominating the global photovoltaic (PV) market. However, as the efficiency of silicon single junction solar cells approaches its theoretical limit, the PV industry and research community are turning their attention to next-generation technologies like tandem solar cells. Tandem solar cells use multiple layers of light-absorbing materials with different bandgaps to better utilise the solar spectrum, making them more efficient than single-junction cells. While tandem solar cells are an exciting new technology, they still require intensive research to become commercially viable.
Characterisation plays a vital role in the development of solar cells. Note that the world record for silicon solar cell efficiency that had been held by UNSW for many decades was strongly supported by the availability of state-of-the-art characterisation tools. In this project, we are seeking a motivated PhD candidate to develop advanced characterisation techniques for tandem solar cells to bring transformative change to the PV industry. More specifically, you will develop:
Advanced in-depth characterisation techniques to better understand the material properties and device physics of tandem solar cells, assisting the optimisation of tandem solar cells.
High throughput quality-inspection techniques to facilitate the mass production of tandem solar cells.
You will explore multiple advanced characterisation techniques including Kelvin probe, magnetic field imaging, hyperspectral imaging, and many more. You will also innovatively adapt several existing characterisation techniques for single junction solar cells to tandem solar cells, such as luminescence imaging, time-resolved photoluminescence, etc. Through a collaborative environment, you will get access to state-of-the-art laboratories, high efficiency tandem solar cells, as well as industrial large area devices. Apart from hands-on experience during the developing of novel characterisation systems, you will also gain knowledge and skills in simulation and loss analysis of tandem solar cells.

Advanced Characterisation Methods For Tandem Solar Cells

The aim of this project is to modify the electronic band-structure of various 2D materials (conventional semiconductor heterostructures and atomically thin exfoliated materials) via nanoscale patterning aiming to realize exotic electronic phases probed by electrical transport measurements. The results can shed light on fundamental questions in solid state physics such as mechanisms of high temperature superconductivity but can also have practical applications including post CMOS low power electronics. This project is an integral part of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Future Low Energy Electronics and involves strong internode collaboration.

Artificially Designed Electronic Materials

Organisations face increasing pressure to deliver value aligned with both financial and environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals. Yet we know very little about the way in which managers within these organisations use financial and nonfinancial ESG performance information to make decisions that support their ESG goals. This project aims to examine how managers use ESG performance information to make internal business decisions, and create new knowledge on how an organisation's performance measurement system influences their decision making processes. Our project outcomes will benefit preparers and users of ESG information within organisations, who by making better ESG-related decisions can create long-term value for all stakeholders.

Judgment and Decision Making Using Esg Performance Information

The continuous increase in energy conversion efficiency and decrease in the cost have made solar power the cheapest form of electricity in most countries. As a result, silicon-based solar cell technologies are currently dominating the global photovoltaic (PV) market. Furthermore, with the global push to combat climate change, it's estimated that over 80 TW of solar power will need to be installed by 2050 - which is a huge increase from the current global cumulative capacity of 1 TW achieved in 2022. Such growth in the PV industry was previously driven by economies of scale. To facilitate and continue this immense growth, the industry will need the assistance of artificial intelligence in all aspects of the PV supply chain.
Characterisation plays a vital role in the development and monitoring of solar cells in all aspects from manufacturing of the wafers to a PV module's end-of-life. Utilising machine learning (ML) to unlock powerful characterisation techniques as well as making current techniques more effective will enhance the development and monitoring of PV cells and modules. We are seeking a motivated PhD candidates to develop state-of-the-art ML applications for different aspects of the PV value chain. You will join a strong team of talented researchers working to apply ML to:
extract various electrical properties for luminescence images of silicon wafers, solar cells, and PV modules

Machine Learning Applications For Photovoltaics

Directly responding to Australia's COVID-19 recovery plans, this research seeks to develop new knowledge about the cognitive, social and technical factors that shape the effectiveness of online international design teams. Its goal is to leverage the opportunities provided through technological advances and multicultural practices, to remove barriers to design productivity and enhance creativity.
While design practices are central to sustaining Australia's creative export sector, growing concerns associated with online, multilingual design teams have been identified.
This PhD project, one part of an interdisciplinary ARC-funded study, will use a rigorous empirical method for researching design cognition, focusing on the relationships between cognitive and social systems as well as between cognitive and technical systems in multicultural design teamwork.

Architecture: Architectural Design Across Spaces and Cultures

Electrochemical energy storage is a key technology in the pursuit of net zero emissions and to mitigate climate change. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are currently the leading storage chemistry across many sectors, such as for electric vehicles (EVs) and grid-scale storage. However, recent findings have revealed that conventional LIB electrolytes are incompatible with the most promising next-generation cathode materials when the battery is charged. New electrolyte solutions are needed to meet this challenge. With a focus on high-energy cathode materials with low- or no cobalt (alleviating environmental and societal concerns), this project will explore electrolyte solutions from several novel classes of electrolytes. The aims of the project will be to (i) explore the interfacial reactivity at the electrolyte-electrode interface, (ii) understand the key modes of degradation, and (iii) develop novel materials-based solutions that facilitate improved long-term performance and overall battery safety.

New Electrolytes For High-Energy Lithium-Ion Batteries

We are an inorganic chemistry group and interested in pairing fundamental inorganic chemistry and supramolecular chemistry to drive sub-angstrom control over the pore environment in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for storage, separation and catalytic applications.
Our group is interested in understanding the host-guest chemistry of MOFs and how this influences the structural and behavioral properties of the MOF. This includes investigating the gas capture of the MOF for different guests, structural changes in response to temperature and pressure, and also the catalytic properties of new frameworks. Our group is interested in using 3D-linkers to form 3D-linker MOFs (3DL-MOFs) which generally offer more sites for host-guest interactions compared with MOFs formed from traditional linkers. This project has a strong collaborative component with multidisciplinary groups from Australia, New Zealand, the USA and the UK, in addition to in-depth studies at the Australian Synchrotron, which allows for a deeper understanding of the MOF material properties. This work will involve some or all of organic and inorganic synthesis, MOF preparation, crystallography and gas adsorption. Investigating Host-Guest Interactions in Metal-Organic Frameworks (Mofs)

Electrochemical energy storage is playing a pivotal role in the global pursuit for a clean and sustainable energy future. Concerns about the future cost of lithium, due to increasing demand, are driving battery research into new chemistries beyond lithium-ion. Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are attracting significant attention because of the relative abundance of raw materials, their environmental-friendliness, safety, and low price. However, the storage capacity and long-term performance of SIBs are currently limited by the properties and performance of the cathode (particularly the low sodium content) and irreversible sodium trapping reactions at the anode. The aim of the project is to increase the energy density and cycle life of SIBs, which will be targeted through exploration of practical sodium inventory solutions and fundamental investigations of the internal battery processes.

Advanced Materials For Sodium-Ion Batteries

Chemically complex ceramics (CCCs) are an exciting class of materials that exhibit unusual yet exciting thermal, mechanical, optical and catalytic properties. The complexity of these materials makes it difficult to use rational design strategy, where Edisonian approaches are used to hopefully obtain materials with desired properties. In this project, we aim to remove the guesswork out of CCCs creation by constructing structure/function relationships using a suite of synchrotron characterization tools.

Scholarship in Chemical Engineering

Innovations in composite materials significantly push the advances of structural and mechanical engineering. Introducing internal pores into the traditional homogeneous matrix leads to the development of a new class of multifunctional lightweight structural/composite forms, which not only reduce the weight, but also bring about innovative features, such as improved energy absorption capacity, enhanced thermal conductivity, and novel vibration characteristics. All these merits make this new structural design appealing to various industrial sectors, including infrastructure, airspace, vehicle, etc.
This interdisciplinary project will explore the impacts of non-uniform/graded cellular morphologies on the mechanical behaviours of porous structural components (beams, plates, shells made of foams, lattices, honeycombs), by means of computational mechanics, numerical modelling, additive manufacturing, and mechanical testing (single or combined). The goal is to develop methods to obtain the optimum porosity geometries for reaching desired structural performances.
The PhD candidates will conduct research within School of Civil & Environmental Engineering. Domestic and international collaborations will be scheduled. Additional supports (attending conferences, and others) will be provided to strong candidates.
