The University of York is a host university for the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission. Various opportunities are available throughout the year. The majority of awards are funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowships provide talented and motivated individuals with the opportunity to enhance knowledge and skills in their given sector, in order to contribute to sustainable development in their home countries. These awards are offered under six development themes:

Commonwealth Scholarship

75% & above from CBSE, ICSE (Gujarat, Punjab/Haryana exception), Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu completed in the last 7 years (PTE academic online, duolingo, TOFEL home based all accepted).

Each year we award up to four international excellence scholarships based on academic merit and financial need. For 2022 entry the Scholarship was 5% of the overseas tuition fee for each year of successful study on the five-year MB BS Medicine Programme, paid as a tuition fee discount.

Hull York Medical School International Excellence Scholarship

The Department is grateful to History alumnus Francis McCormack for establishing the McCormack Scholarship. This is an award of a fee waiver at the UK rate, open to any Home or International (including EU) student who has applied to study on one of the Department's MA programmes.

Centre for Medieval Studies MA Scholarships

The Maria Bourboulis scholarship fund is awarded in memory of York Alumna Maria Bourboulis - to continue to support Social Policy and Sociology students.

Applications are invited from highly qualified and motivated applicants to take up this MA scholarship opportunity. The scholarship is to be awarded to a candidate applying for a postgraduate degree in either Social Policy and Social Work or Sociology.  A committee formed by the Head of Graduate School in Social Policy and Social Work and the Head of Graduate School in Sociology will determine the successful recipient each year.

Maria Bourboulis Scholarship

Fee waiver + GBP4,050 stipend (paid in quarterly instalments). The scholarship covers a Fee waiver at the home or international Tuition Fee rate.

The MA in Medical History and Humanities has been awarded a Wellcome Trust Masters Programme Award in Humanities and Social Sciences.

This award scheme supports Masters programmes to train humanities and social science researchers in any area of health. At York, the award will support five scholarships over three years. The Department is offering two scholarships for applicants commencing their studies in Autumn 2023.

This year's scholarship is open to all UK and international applicants who have applied to the MA in Medical History and Humanities by 5pm on Wednesday 3 May 2023. All applications will be assessed for academic rigour, ambition, and leadership potential. The candidate's plans to use the Masters programme to prepare for their future careers will also be taken into account. This may include using the MA to prepare for PhD research, or careers in health-related humanities or social science, or outside academia.

We care about opening up access to those who have previously not had the opportunity. We strongly encourage applicants from backgrounds that are less advantaged or under-represented in higher education. To further support this aim, we have specifically ring-fenced one scholarship for an applicant from an under-represented or less advantaged background.

Wellcome Trust Scholarships for the MA in Medical History and Humanities

Fee waiver at the UK (Home) Rate, and a Stipend of GBP16,000

The Friends of York Art Gallery Research Scholarship will provide the successful applicant with a UK fee waiver (or equivalent value deduction for international students) and an opportunity to undertake a placement at the gallery.

Open to International (including EU) and UK (home) students.

Open to students in the Department of History of Art.

To be eligible to apply for this bursary with internship, you must already be holding an offer of a place on the taught MA in History of Art, or a related pathway degree. Applications are welcomed from all full-time offer holders, regardless of fee status (Home, EU or Overseas).

Be Exceptional Scholarships

The MastersCompare Postgraduate Scholarship is open to UK, EU and International students who are starting the first year of a Masters course in September or October 2022 at any UK university.

To be eligible for consideration of the MastersCompare Postgraduate Scholarship, a student:

must have an unconditional offer of a place on a part-time or full-time postgraduate programme
must have submitted the course application no later than 26th August 2022
must register to receive the MastersCompare email newsletter
You are not eligible to enter if you are continuing an existing Masters course.

To be eligible to win you must have enrolled, and be able to provide proof of enrolment, onto a Masters degree by the end of October 2022 at any UK university. A completed Masters degree will have a typical minimum of 180 credits, at least 150 of which must be at FHEQ/ FQHEIS Level 7, according to the common features set by the QAA*.

*The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) is the independent body that checks on standards and quality in UK higher education.

Masters Compare Scholarship

The Department of Philosophy is offering the David Efird Masters Scholarship which is in the form of a GBP5,000 reduction in fees.

The scholarship is aimed at all students pursuing research in the field of philosophy of religion, or research on contemporary issues or themes using a philosophy of religion perspective. The Scholarship is generously funded by the family of Dr David Efird, who taught at York from 2002 until his sudden death in 2020.

Open to students in the Department of Philosophy.

To be considered for the scholarship, you must be holding an offer of a place on the MA in Analytic Theology or the MA in Philosophy by 28 April 2023.

David Efird Masters Scholarship

Designed to recognise and reward academic achievement among international students from a number of countries worldwide.

Open to International (including EU) students only.

Open to students in the School for Business and Society.

You must be holding a conditional firm or unconditional offer to study with the University of York Management School in the academic year 2022/23, and be a national of the country for which you are applying.

Only available to students studying an on-campus programme. (York Online students are not eligible.)

Management School Masters International Academic Excellence Scholarship

These scholarships are open to those who identify as scholars of colour. The topic on which you choose to work, and the discipline in which you are centred, is entirely open, so long as it fits within a broad definition of Renaissance studies (c. 1400-1700).

As part of a positive and practical effort to attract more early career scholars of colour to the Renaissance, the Society for Renaissance Studies is launching a fund to support MA Scholarship Awards for Scholars of Colour.

The Alcuin Scholarship

Thanks to the C & JB Morrell Trust, we have two bursaries available to students on the MA in Political and Legal Philosophy. These bursaries are for GBP3000 as a contribution towards living costs, paid in three instalments of GBP1000 across the year.

C and JB Morrell Trust Bursaries

An annual stipend of GBP3,000 to a full-time student who has applied to study on one of the Department of History's MA programmes.

The Hampson Scholarship was set up in memory of Professor Norman Hampson (1922 to 2011), a historian of the French Revolution and Professor in the Department of History from 1974 to 1989. The Scholarship was established as a result of generous donations from Professor Hampson's daughters, Francoise and Michele. Priority is given to students working in the area of French and/or Enlightenment History but if a suitable candidate cannot be found within this area, then the criteria will be widened to include European history.

The Hampson Scholarship

While attention should be paid to practicalities, proposals will be welcomed which take an innovative approach to instrumentation. Instrumentation, in this case, may be understood to include voices and electronics as well as any available instrumental forces. The piece proposed may also make critical use of a pre-existing source should make use of at least one of our existing ensembles.

Applicants should outline their plan on a single side of A4 paper. The plan should be realistic and include relevant practical details. The successful applicants will be notified in late September. Successful applicants will be invited to enter into detailed discussion with representatives of the department ensembles, regarding a deadline for delivery of performance material and arrangements for rehearsal.

Terry Holmes Composer and Performer Award

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Department of History is delighted to announce the History BA Undergraduate Scholarship, awarded each year to a student commencing their undergraduate studies in the Department of History who best meets the eligibility criteria.

The History BA Undergraduate Scholarship has been established to provide support to talented students who have the academic potential to study History at York and for whom a BA Honours degree in History (or a BA Combined Honours degree that includes History) would enable them to fulfil their educational and professional ambitions.

you have applied via UCAS for a Chemistry course at York.

Department of Archaeology Bursaries

The Feilden Centenary Scholarship for international students commemorates respected conservation architect, Sir Bernard Feilden.

Sir Bernard Feilden made a special contribution to progressive thinking in heritage conservation at York and in his commitment to international collaboration and training.

The scholarship fund, donated by Conservation alumni, aims to provide support to remove financial barriers for international students who have the most to gain from coming to York to take advantage of the opportunities of studying heritage conservation here.

The opportunity is not restricted to students applying to the Conservation Studies programmes - applicants to other programmes could be candidates if they have a conservation interest.

Feilden Centenary Scholarship

The Oratory of St Philip Neri at St Wilfrid's Catholic Church offers choral scholarships for soprano, alto, tenor and bass to form a quartet.


St Wilfrid's Church Scholarship

The award is made to a current postgraduate student to support a performance inspired by Bernstein's 'Chichester Psalms'.

This annual award was set up in memory of Jack Lyons by his widow, Lady Roslyn. The award recognises Jack's unfailing support for creative musicians and is intended to allow the recipient to undertake a significant creative musical project, culminating in a public musical performance.

One of Jack's most cherished pieces was Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms. This competition asks applicants to outline an innovative project that is in some way inspired by that work. For example, a composer might propose a new setting of these or other psalms, or a work that uses related Hebrew texts. A performer might propose a programme of psalm settings, or pieces which relate in some way to the Bernstein work. Other connections may be explored.
