Virginia Wesleyan University was founded in 1961. It has religious affiliations with United Methodist Church. It was chartered in the same year under the initiative of Methodist minister Joseph Shackford Johnson. It was founded as a college and became a university in 2017. Till now university had 5 presidents and the name of the current president is Scott Douglas Miller. `

The campus of Virginia Wesleyan University is located in Virginia Beach. The campus is scattered in an area of 300-acre and the university is divided into four villages. Bray Village and Allen Village offer a combined living and learning environment while Brock Village and Honors Village are residential areas. The campus of the university is home to the Chesapeake Bay Academy which is an educational institution that educates and guides students with learning disabilities, ADHD, dyslexia and the Tidewater Collegiate Academy.
