Australia has made several important changes to its student visa rules in 2025. These updates affect everyone who wants to study in Australia. If you plan to apply for an Australian student visa, it is important to know these new rules so you can prepare well.
Cap on International Student Numbers
From January 1, 2025, the Australian government has set a cap of 270,000 new international student enrolments for the year. This is a big change from before and will make the application process more competitive. The cap is not the same for all courses. Higher education and research students get more places than vocational or short courses.
Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) Requirement
Starting January 1, 2025, you must have a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from your Australian education provider before you apply for a student visa. The Letter of Offer is no longer accepted for visa applications. This rule applies to all new applications made on or after January 1, 2025.
Higher Financial Requirements
The minimum savings you need to show for your Australian student visa has increased. As of May 2024, you must have at least AUD 29,710 to cover 12 months of living expenses for the main applicant. This is to make sure you can support yourself while studying in Australia.
Increased Visa Application Fee
The student visa australia price has also gone up. The application fee is now AUD 1,808, which is higher than before. This change is meant to cover the extra costs of processing more applications.
Higher English Language Requirements
From March 23, 2024, the minimum English language score required for a student visa is now IELTS 6.0. For the Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485), the minimum is IELTS 6.5. These higher scores are to make sure students can succeed in their studies.
New Genuine Student Requirement
The Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) rule is now replaced by the Genuine Student (GS) requirement. This new rule checks if you are a real student who wants to study and not just use the visa to stay in Australia. The GS requirement started for all applications from March 23, 2024.
Changes to Post-Study Work Rights
The rules for the Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) have changed. The two-year extension for some degrees has been removed. The age limit for most graduates is now 35 years, except for Masters and Doctoral graduates, who can be under 50. Bachelor’s degree holders can now stay for up to 2 years after graduation.
Faster and Stricter Visa Processing
A new system called Ministerial Direction 111 (MD111) is now used to process student visa applications. It has two levels: high priority and standard priority. This helps process most applications faster, but also means more checks to make sure only genuine students get visas
