- NC State will begin its 2020-21 academic year on August 10, nine days earlier than originally scheduled, and will forgo fall break in order to complete the semester before Thanksgiving, including finals.

North Carolina State University

- The Fall semester online will not count towards the Curricular Practical Training (CPT) requirement of two semesters. However, if you begin your program online, you will be eligible for both CPT and OPT after completing two semesters of on campus study
- RIT has extended the graduate deposit deadline from May 1 to May 15 to alleviate pressure on students and families. We have many programs that have limited capacity and wait lists, and will begin going to the wait lists after May 15, so be sure to pay the $500 deposit by May 15 to reserve your place in the program and your merit scholarship..
- The tuition deposit is refundable only if you apply for and are denied a visa. In this case, you will need to show proof of that denial.
- Any student who completes the Fall semester online and is not able to come to campus in Spring 2021 will be able to continue their masters degree program on campus in the next available term. University will work with you to develop an individual plan of study once you complete the Fall online semester.
- Due to program demand we are not entertaining requests for deferrals at this time.
- RIT has a long history of online education, and we currently offer more than 30 degree programs online – most of which are graduate programs. Many on-campus students elect to take online courses while they are studying on campus.

Rochester Institute of Technology

- Cornell remains open and all classes have moved to online instruction. 
- Cornell anticipates to be operational in the fall, with teaching and research activities occurring on campus, and online in certain circumstances. Plan to welcome fall 2020 admits to campus in August. 
- Given the fluidity of travel restrictions and consular closings, obtaining a visa or travelling to the US might not be possible for all fall entrants. Contact your academic program to discuss deferral options; some programs may have online options available.
- If you’re an Active student (Active SEVIS record, continuing or transfer student), for the duration of the COVID-19 emergency the semester of online learning will apply to your work authorization eligibility. You can spend this semester inside or outside the U.S. If your program starts online and transitions to in-person mid-semester, this semester will count towards the one-year eligibility provided that late in-person arrival is acceptable for your academic program.
- If you’re an incoming student (no Active SEVIS record) an online semester spent entirely abroad will not count towards OPT/CPT eligibility. 
- If Cornell provides online instruction for the fall, we cannot guarantee at this time that all forms of Cornell funding for international graduate students engaging in online study will continue to be available. We are currently issuing I-20 and DS-2019 forms as usual.

Cornell university 

- Planning to offer several remote learning options for those who cannot join us on campus in September
- Remote options will also be available through the Spring and Summer 2021 terms to help meet social distancing requirements within classrooms, such as alternating in-person and online attendance in large lectures.
- The Fall 2020 semester may or may not count towards the full-time status for one academic year (two consecutive semesters) in the F-1 visa / OPT requirement, depending on your date of arrival. However, the Spring and Summer 2021 semesters completed in person would count towards this requirement and students will be able to apply for /CPT/OPT at the end of Summer 2021.

New York University 

- While the university has every intention of resuming face-to-face instruction in the fall, should conditions prevent from doing so, the university will have contingency plans in place to transition more courses to remote instruction in order to allow students to maintain their academic progress.
- Tuition and fees for the upcoming academic year have not yet been approved by the Board of Trustees.
- After Thanksgiving, all classes and final exams will be delivered in a quality online format.

Tips from Indian Fullbrighters on the application and selection process

**Start the process early: **“The early bird catches the worm.” This popular saying is relevant for prospective applicants for the Fulbright-Nehru program. I began my preparation for the Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship in 2013, six months prior to the July deadline. As I began early, I was able to do extensive research on the Fulbright program by reading articles, essays and blogs to understand the essence of this prestigious fellowship.

**Read the application instructions: **I found the actual application process easy as USIEF had prepared detailed instructions on the application process. There are several tips provided in the application form to help prepare a strong application. My advice to all applicants would be to devote time to read and understand the application instructions.

**Write clearly and use simple language**: As there are several sections in the application, the strategy I adopted was to spend two to three days on each section. After completing all the sections, I revised the application in its entirety a few times to ensure consistency. I advise all applicants to use simple and grammatically correct language and avoid using bombastic style.

**Highlight the novelty in your research proposal:** You should spend time to find out if similar research is being done in your field. It is important to ensure that your research adds a new dimension and contributes to the existing literature.

**Establish the raison d’être to conduct your study in the U.S**.: It is important to have a clear sense of “why” the research needs to be done in the U.S. Some criteria to consider would be — availability of primary sources, and interaction with well-known experts in your discipline among others. Highlight the extracurricular activities in your application. It is important to include information about your personal trajectories and how these steered you to apply for a Fulbright-Nehru fellowship.

**Choosing referees**: You should always reach out to those well versed with your work against someone who is a well-known name. Remember to get referees who can comment on different aspects of your credentials.

**Prepare for the interview**: Highlight the importance of your research and identify the significance it may bear upon your study discipline and on the contemporary realities of India and the U.S.

**Host University:** Identify institutions which could actually complement and benefit your own research.

Fulbright Foreign Student Program

The Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation, under its postgraduate scholarship Programme, offers Indian students with consistently high academic records, an interest-free, loan scholarship for post-graduation.

The PG scholarship amount, extending up to a maximum of Rs. 20 lakhs, is awarded on the basis of the Foundation’s assessment of prospective candidates.

The Foundation awards its postgraduate scholarship to students, who wish to pursue their studies in the fields of Pure Sciences, Applied Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities, Law, Architecture and Management at prestigious Indian and international universities.

All applications will be screened for shortlisting. Only shortlisted candidates will be informed between the months of April and May. It is mandatory for all the shortlisted candidates to attend a personal interview in Mumbai in the month of June. The interview is the basis for final selection.

It is mandatory for all the scholars to submit attested copies of the following documents within the timeline as decided by the Foundation:
The letter confirming admission to the college/ university for the proposed course of study.
I-20 in the case of students admitted to universities in the United States and a copy of the letter highlighting the financial support in the case of students admitted to universities in other countries.

**Number of Awards**

The maximum number of students selected across India to receive this award is 20.

**Disbursement and Repayment of PG Scholarship Loan**
On receiving a copy of the visa, the scholarship for the post-graduate course will be disbursed. Repayments will commence one year after the completion of the course as per the following schedule:
- 1st year after course completion: Nil
- 2nd year after course completion: 30% of the scholarship amount
- 3rd year after course completion: 35% of the scholarship amount
- 4th year after course completion: 35% of the scholarship amount

**Eligibility Criteria**

The Foundation will award its PG scholarship to students who fulfil the following criteria:

- Indian nationals residing in India
- Students below 30 years of age
- Graduates of a recognized university (students in the final year of a degree course and those awaiting their results are also eligible to apply)
- Students having sought admission for a postgraduate degree programme at any prestigious university for the fall intake (Those who are awaiting a decision from a university are also eligible to apply. However, the award of the scholarship is subject to them securing admission)

**Application Process**

All applications for the Narotam Sekhsaria’s scholarships for post-graduation are received by the Foundation in the month of January for every academic year.

- STEP 1: The mode of application for the Foundation’s postgraduate scholarships is online: The candidate is required to complete the registration online at http://pg.nsfoundation.co.in
- STEP 2: Upon registration for the Foundation’s PG Scholarship, the login credentials will be sent to the registered email ID. Once the registration is complete, an application fee of Rs. 500/- is payable either online through Net Banking or offline by sending a Demand Draft issued in favor of the Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation
- STEP 3: On receiving the application fee, the candidate will be able to access the form online by logging in with the provided login credentials. Completed application forms should be submitted before the closing date
- STEP 4: Only candidates shortlisted for the next round of the selection process are contacted by the Foundation. They are required to produce duly certified supporting documents
- STEP 5: The next round of the selection process is the interview round, for which candidates are required to come down to the Foundation’s office

Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation

The JN Tata Endowment for the Higher Education of Indians has been helping Indian students since 1892 with loan scholarships for higher studies. People consider it a matter of great pride to be called a ‘JN Tata Scholar’. There are now more than 5,004 JN Tata Scholars all over the world.

The J. N. Tata Endowment awards a one-time loan scholarship only at the beginning of the course to Indian nationals for full time Postgraduate/Ph.D./Postdoctoral studies, in all fields, irrespective of caste, creed, gender or community. The amount to be awarded to each scholar by way of the loan scholarship is determined on the basis of the norms laid down for the purpose, and ranges between Rs.1,00,000/- and Rs.10,00,000/-. All selected applicants do not necessarily qualify for the maximum amount.

The selected scholars may also be recommended for a gift scholarship and travel assistance from allied Trusts as may be decided at the sole discretion of the Trustees of the concerned Trusts. A gift scholarship can be for a maximum amount of Rs.7,50,000/- and the travel grant can be a maximum of Rs.50,000/-.

**Eligibility Criteria**

Applicants should be Indian nationals who are graduates of a recognized Indian University, with a consistently good academic record and other achievements to their credit.

Students in the final year of the degree course and those awaiting results are eligible to apply. Candidates may apply even if they have not received admission from any university at the time of filling out the scholarship application form.

Candidates may, therefore, update their application status with the Endowment once they secure admission. Mid-career professionals up to the age of 45, with good academic records and experience in their fields, specializations or training may also apply.

Scholars going abroad for seminars, conferences and undergraduate studies are not eligible for a J. N. Tata Endowment Loan Scholarship.

**Selection for the Awards**

It is a matter of pride to be called a JN Tata Scholar. Staying true to the founder, Jamsetjee Nusserwanjee’s vision of rewarding the brightest and the best, a rigorous selection process is followed. Candidates may note the following points.

- Apart from consistent academic performance, importance is given to participation in both co-curricular and extra-curricular activities
- A good GRE/GMAT/TOEFL/IELTS score is extremely important for those applying overseas. If you have received a low GRE score, it may be advisable to improve upon it, to increase your chances of receiving the loan scholarship
- The statement of purpose carries considerable weight in the selection process. We have provided some guidance on our web site on how you can construct a good statement of purpose. Please ensure that your statement of purpose is written by you and free from plagiarism
- After the initial screening of applications, candidates who are found suitable will have to undergo an online test, the date and time of which will be informed to them. Candidates shortlisted based on the online test will be called for the interview. Such candidates should mail scanned copies of the required documents before the time of the interview

**The Interview**

Candidates should note that to be shortlisted for an interview is no guarantee of receiving the loan scholarship. The interview carries significant weightage in the selection process and is conducted in Mumbai by a Technical Committee.

Candidates should come prepared with knowledge of their subjects and suggested areas of interest, as they will be examined in detail.

The greatest weight will be given to depth of understanding of the chosen area of study and career path. There will be two interviewers, one of whom is a subject-expert and the other is the Director of the Endowment.

The final selection of scholars for the award of the loan scholarship is based on the following criteria

- Performance at the interview
- Score in the online test
- Score based on academic results, GRE/GMAT/IELTS/TOEFL scores, extra-curricular activities, research work, statement of purpose, and work experience.

**Formalities to be completed**

The candidate and the guarantor (preferably a parent or a relative having the capacity to repay the loan) will have to visit the Administrative Office of the Endowment, by prior appointment, to complete the necessary formalities, after obtaining the visa, in case of students going overseas. They will be required to enter into a legal agreement with the Trustee and provide documentary evidence of the capacity of the guarantor to repay the loan.

Repayment of the loan begins from the time the scholar starts earning or by the end of the third year from the availment of the loan, whichever is earlier. The amount of repayment is 20% of the loan scholarship from the end of the third year to the end of the seventh year.

The JN Tata Endowment for the Higher Education of Indians

R D Sethna Scholarship, one of the oldest and best known scholarship programs, was initiated after the death of Mr R D Sethna, the Indian Philanthropist, in 1938. The scholarship aims to assist outstanding and deserving students of all communities.

The R D Sethna Scholarship Fund grants only loan scholarships to students who are citizens of India, regardless of community, caste or creed.

Loan scholarships are granted to enable students to undertake scientific, technical, industrial or commercial studies in India and overseas on the condition that they are repayable with interest in terms of the agreement and other documents required to be entered into and executed by applicants and their male guarantors.

**Application Process**

All Applications should be made on the prescribed Form, which can be obtained on request from the Trust office. No Forms will be sent to intending applicants by post, unless the request is accompanied by payment of Rs.50/- either by a Postal Order or by a demand draft in favor of R D Sethna Scholarship Fund.

Applicants must also send a self addressed Rs.10/- stamped envelope of size: 23 cm x 10 cm. Applicants must indicate whether the Form is required for studies in India or overseas.

Applications for loan scholarships are invited by the Trust from 1st April each year. The last date for receiving applications for overseas studies is May 31 and for local studies is August 31 each year. Only successful applicants will be informed of the grant, and no intimation will be given to unsuccessful applicants.

**Eligibility Criteria**

Only those applicants who have passed at least the Secondary School Certificate examination or other equivalent examination and who have secured no less than 50% of the total marks in the last examination given by them prior to submitting the application are eligible to apply for a loan scholarship.

The person proposed as guarantor must be a male, and a permanent resident of Mumbai having a monthly income of not less than Rs.10,000/- for applicants pursuing studies in India and Rs.15,000/- for applicants pursuing studies overseas.

Applicants must submit letters of recommendation from 2 recommenders who are permanent residents in Mumbai.

**Documents Required**

The application form must be legibly filled in and must be accompanied by the following documents:

- Certified copies of the mark sheets of the applicant at each examination commencing with the Secondary School
- Certificate examination or other equivalent examination.
- A copy of the letter of admission to the college, Institution or University at which the applicant intends to undertake studies. In the case of applicants who have secured admission to US Universities or Institutions, they must enclose a copy of the Form I-20. For studies in India, the applicant must produce the receipt of the admission fees paid to the College or Institution.
- Salary certificate or copy of income-tax assessment order of the parents and the person proposed as guarantor.
- Copies of testimonials/letters of recommendations given to the applicant.
- A passport size photograph duly certified as the applicant’s photograph by a S.E.M. or Gazetted Officer or head of any recognized college or institution in which the applicant has studied or is studying.
- Students hoping to study in India must submit proof of the recognition granted to the College or the Institute by the Govt. of India.

Since 1956, K. C. Mahindra Education Trust has granted interest-free loan scholarships to deserving students to pursue post-graduate studies abroad in various fields.

Every year, the trust offers the following scholarships:

The Generation Google Scholarship

Scholarships are granted at top American, European and UK institutions, for funding requirements including tuition fees.

- Scholarships are open to all Indian citizens residing in India at the time of application
- Candidates are normally expected to hold a good first degree from a recognized university in India. Indian citizens, who hold a good undergraduate degree from a recognized university outside India, must have resided continuously and been employed or been studying in India, for at least two years, after their under-graduation
- People having a postgraduate degree (e.g. Master’s or PhD) from a university outside India are not eligible; those who have started but not completed a postgraduate degree outside India are also ineligible
- It is essential to have prior admission to the institution and course chosen. The Foundation will not consider candidates without admission or pending admission. The institutions concerned must be top ranked
- Candidates must be below 30 years of age on the first of July in the year of application. Candidates who are already studying or have started their program abroad are not eligible
- The award of other grants, teaching assistantships and support from other sources for the proposed program will be regarded by the Foundation as a positive factor. The Foundation also encourages applications from young people currently employed

The SelfScore Scholarship is the only national scholarship program dedicated to F1, J1, and M1 students studying in the US.

For Fall, they award twelve $5,000 scholarships with six going to undergraduates and six going to graduate students. All applicants are enrolled in a free financial literacy program designed for international students.

Students studying in the US on a F1, J1 or M1 visa during the academic year are eligible to apply for these scholarships. They must be accepted to study or should be continuing to study at an eligible college or university.

These students spend a lot of time preparing for their GRE exam, carefully short-listing universities and writing powerful essays. But they fail to plan well so as to apply early, which results in missed scholarships. This is simply because there are no more scholarships left!

One of the biggest mistakes of international students is assuming that university admission deadlines and scholarship deadlines are the same. Very often they apply for their scholarship along with the rest of the admission application.

However, in many cases the two deadlines are different. Depending on the school, the deadlines may vary. In some cases, scholarship deadlines may be two months earlier than admissions deadline.

You have to clearly look for scholarships / financial aid vs admission deadlines. To be eligible, plan well ahead of time and avoid missing deadlines.

#1 Applying for Scholarships

There are a plethora of scholarships available for international students, each with its own eligibility criteria and requirements.

Unless you meet the requirements, you can’t apply for scholarships. Use Google to check up on financial aid / scholarships at your target universities and find out whether you meet the eligibility criteria.

#2 Scholarship Eligibility or Requirements

Your 10th, 11th or 12th marks will not heavily influence scholarship decisions. When the university assesses your academic abilities, what you did 4-6 years ago, will not matter as much as your more recent achievements.

Most of the US universities only consider your undergraduate – B.Tech or BE degree – marks. Some Universities do ask for the 11th and 12th grade scores, but very few consider these scores while making a decision.

#3 10th, 11th or 12th Marks

Academics are very important for making scholarship decisions.

If you have performed poorly in your GRE or GMAT and you have a high GPA, you still have a decent chance of earning a scholarship.

Most universities place a lot of emphasis on undergraduate GPA. They look at both – your GPA across every semester / year and total aggregate GPA (or percentage) across all four years. Moreover, the application is always judged holistically to decide on whether the scholarship is awarded.

#4 Undergraduate GPA or Percentages

Having a good test score – GRE, GMAT, IELTS, TOEFL – will always increase your chances of getting a scholarship.

If you are one of those students who doesn’t perform well in standardized tests, but earned a great GPA in your undergraduate degree, you still have a decent shot at scholarships. Your score has to be decent, but NOT bad.

Leadership skills and Volunteering are weighed significantly by universities when considering students for scholarships.

Demonstrate your ability to lead by stepping forward whenever you can.

Learn how to manage people, budgets, and / or projects. A typical leadership skill would be serving as a president or on the executive board for an academic or social organization in your undergraduate programs.

Volunteer to help others. Start a group to help others. You could conduct seminars and raise the awareness of school kids on issues like drug abuse, sexual abuse, adolescent health, online privacy and safety, etc.

These are very important because scholarships endowments are typically created to encourage students who have good ideals for society and take up leadership roles and help others and the community succeed.

So, being part of a social or academic organization in your undergraduate program or volunteering is key and you must include all of these certificates, if you have any, or at least quote your experiences in scholarships essays.

This is what distinguishes you from others who just have high GRE/GMAT scores and high academic percentages.

#6 Leadership and Volunteering

Any achievements, publications or recognition are very important for scholarships.

Any achievements matter. This includes being at the top of your class, oratory competitions, paper publications, winning any type of sports competition, being recognized as the top employee of the month, etc. Use these achievements to strengthen your scholarship application.

Make sure you provide documentation as evidence of your achievements with your scholarship application.

#7 Achievements, Publications and Recognition

It’s not easy to separate your scholarship application from the crowd. After all, even if you fit the criteria to a “T,” you’re still likely to be one of a number of applicants with similar grades, goals, activities and aspirations.

That’s where a great application essay comes in. The essay is your best chance to make the case for why you should receive the scholarship; it helps the scholarship provider learn about the person behind the application, and gives them a much more detailed look at your school and home life.

You have to be genuine when you explain why you deserve a scholarship.

Some scholarship applications ask for your recommendation letters from professors or anyone who you report to professionally. Find someone who knows you well and can give you a good recommendation.

Your recommendation letter should highlight your academic, leadership and people skills. The person recommending you should mention how he knows you and objectively assess your achievements.

While most students avoid applying for scholarships with more requirements in terms of application work involved, these types of scholarships could be a better bet for this very reason. Your chances can be higher due to less competition. When you start looking for scholarships, you may soon get overwhelmed, browsing various university pages like admission pages, department pages, etc.

Your life would become much easier if you know which university office awards the scholarships. Depending on the type of scholarship, different offices, mentioned below, award scholarships:

1. Financial Aid Office: Typically Scholarships are offered by the Financial Aid office in most of the schools.  You should either Google “<University Name> Office of Financial Aid” or look for the “Financial Aid” tab or link in the university website. Sometimes the Financial Aid office is listed under Current Students section or under the Students section. Also, once you get to the financial aid or scholarship office website, you will have to look for scholarships for international students. Every scholarship is different and you will have to look one by one or just look under the international students section. There is no rule that they will specifically list everything for you. You will have to look and apply for the right scholarship.
2. Academic Departments: Another place to look for scholarships or fellowships is to look at the respective academic departments or schools you are applying to. In general, either there are research-related fellowships or any endowments created for someone specializing in the respective major related to that school. You should visit the department or respective school’s website and look for any scholarships or fellowships. While some schools may not list these under different departments, the information should mostly be found under the Financial Aid tab. If you cannot easily access scholarship information, you will have to use the Sitemap link or use the search option.

#11 Finding Scholarships

You should always ask your target university about the availability of scholarships, eligibility, application process and deadline. Even if you found the information on the website, chances are you will come across more comprehensive information.

You should find out who can provide you with more relevant information about scholarships.

You may search for “Graduate Admissions Coordinator” or “Financial Aid Coordinator” and email them, asking about scholarships. The titles may vary a little but you should be able to locate the relevant person.

In case you cannot find this person, just ask the Admissions office. Write a simple email with a subject like “Need help: prospective international student scholarship information” and send them your questions.
