CouponBirds "Help to Save" Scholarship is a program to assist high school and college students in easing financial burdens and empowering them to pursue higher education. A total of CAD3,000 will be awarded to five students who showcase their creativity and talent by submitting a short video sharing their money-saving secrets. This initiative aims to provide financial support to help students succeed in their academic endeavors. The application deadline for the 2025 scholarship is October 10, 2025.

CouponBirds will offer two levels of scholarship for five students: a First Prize and a Second Prize. The First Prize, valued at CAD1,000, will be awarded to one student. The Second Prize, valued at CAD500 each, will be awarded to four students.

Lakeland is a public college located in rural Alberta, Canada. Founded in 1913, it now has two campuses in Vermilion and Lloydminster. Today, the college has over 7,000 students enrolled in full-time and part-time courses, spread across a range of 60 offered programs.
The college also hosts one of the few student-managed working farms in Canada which is also one of the largest farms in North America. Lakeland College is also a member of Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICAN) and the Alberta Rural Development Network. Facts: 1. Lakeland College offers 1.5 million CAD worth of scholarships, awards and bursaries to their students. 2. The college gave $1 million in awards, scholarships and bursaries to its students in 2013. 3. Lakeland serves both Alberta and Saskatchewan residents and is Canada’s only inter-provincial college. 4. Lakeland College’s motto is ‘Ever to Excel’. 5. Lakeland College Emergency Training Centre originated in 1959 as the Fire Officers Training School.

About

On-campus facilities: The Alumni Houses at Vermilion and Lloydminster offer places to stay year round but it is not clear if students can apply for residence in them. Dorm rooms and townhouses of the Vermilion campus are only available from mid-May to mid-August so we wouldn’t recommend relying on accommodation there. Single rooms in shared apartments and two-bedroom townhouses are available all year round at Lloydminster and can be applied to by contacting the Lloydminster residence office. Off-campus facilities: If students are interested in seeking private accommodation, single homes, duplexes, apartments and rooms are available to rent in nearby areas. Students are requested to research for private accommodation on their own and arrive well in advance to move in before the term starts. You can also opt for a homestay if you are on a budget. Food facilities (Availability of vegetarian/Indian food): There are no Indian restaurants in the vicinity of the campus. We recommend you make use of some of the tutorials available online and prepare an Indian meal for yourself if you are feeling homesick.

With several services and facilities, Lakeland College focuses on the overall growth of their students. The institution also realises the financial strain higher education can bring to students and offers financial aid to their students. Students can work part-time to gain work experience as well as financial independence. The rural setting of the college also allows for a unique college experience.

Inclusive education and library services are not the only academic services offered. Along with an Exam/Test Centre, there is also a print shop open to the community as well as students. Today, Alberta’s economy relies upon agriculture, petrochemicals, energy and clean technology. It is also a well-known tourist destination around the world. Important landmarks/places nearby: Vermilion Heritage Museum and Morrison Museum are places you must visit to learn about the history of the place you would be living in. Vermilion Provincial Park and the Lakeland College Arboretum are great places to visit if you are seeking scenic beauty and inner peace. You can find nearby places to relax and mingle and make memories with your friends. Crime rate: When in Alberta, the rural crime rate falls on the higher side when compared to the urban area. In 2017, the rural crime rate was recorded to be 10,964 per 100,000 people whereas it was 7,920 per 100,000 in urban areas. These statistics may seem worrisome but the overall crime rate has been on a decrease as compared to previous years. Nearby Airports: Vermilion Airport is just 6 minutes away from the campus. Lloydminster Municipal Airport (YLL) is another regional airport located 40 minutes away from the campus. If you are looking for a nearby international airport, you would have to drive for more than 2 hours to reach one so we recommend you take a flight to reach an international airport for your travels around the world. Nearby Subways and train stations: The nearest train station is 40 minutes away and therefore not the ideal choice if you are looking for a way to commute daily. You can choose a bus charter according to your needs by looking for one that suits you the most. If nothing works well, we recommend you take the taxi to and from your destination.

Location

Internships: For students of business administration diploma, Lakeland College offers co-op internship opportunities. While it is optional, the Business Co-op program is a 16 week long paid work experience opportunity that shouldn’t be passed on. The placement happens between year 1 and 2 of the diploma and aims at offering clarity to the students and guiding them to their chosen career paths. This program is only available to Canadian students. Summers in Alberta are comfortable and warm but winters are chilly, long and dry. It remains cloudy all year long so make sure you enjoy the sunshine whenever possible. It snows in the winter months, especially in January and February so we recommend you pack accordingly.
