Leland Stanford Junior University is the official name of Stanford University. It is a Stanford-based private research university. One of the best universities in the world, to be exact. Over 17,000 students are enrolled there, which spreads across an area of about 8,180 acres. 
In honour of Leland Stanford Jr., it was established in 1885 by Leland and Jane Stanford. First students were admitted to the coeducational, nondenominational school on October 1, 1891. Financial issues surfaced in 1893 and 1906. Entrepreneurship among faculty and recent graduates was encouraged by provost Frederick Terman.
