Mrs Alison MacGibbon established the award in 1974 in memory of her husband, William Smith MacGibbon (c. 1891-1962). Mrs MacGibbon attended Canterbury College School of Art in 1918. In 1976, she bequeathed to the University a major gift of oil paintings, watercolours, and prints, which formed the W.S. & Alison MacGibbon Collection. William Smith MacGibbon was born in Edinburgh and came to Aotearoa New Zealand as a child. An accountant and businessman, he served on the Christchurch City Council, and he was involved in a variety of civic affairs and charitable organisations, including the Canterbury Society of Arts (CSA). He was awarded an OBE in 1952 for his work.
