Auckland University of Technology traces its roots back to 1895 when it was named Auckland Technical School. At the start, only evening classes were held. Later in 1906, it was renamed Auckland Technical College and daytime classes were also held.
The institution was given university status in 2000 and at the time it was renamed to its current name, Auckland University of Technology.
