Fairmount College is a Congregational college, founded by Wichita State University in 1895. The college was renamed the Municipal University of Wichita in 1926, making it the first municipal university west of the Mississippi River. The current name of the university was given to it in 1964. The Kansas Board of Regents has granted WSU affiliation.
