How to apply for PhD in Canada?

Step 1 - Research your course interest

Take time to do in-depth research on the trending and/or top courses to pursue a PhD in Canada. Check out the course requirements and other relevant criteria you may need to fulfil. Analyse the prospects of choosing such a course, and refer to other courses and their benefits.

Step 2 - Scan the Universities/Colleges

Visit university websites and college websites that you have listed. Check their brochures related to your chosen field and compare their similarities and differences. Compare and check the tuition fees and other accommodation fees per year.

Step 3 - Apply on Time

As instructed, download the application form and read all the details carefully. Checklist all the documents that you are asked for in the form. Compile them and attach them as instructed. Other equally important aspects of the application form include your Statement of Purpose and Letters of Recommendation

  • Make sure you write what you intend.
  • Keep your SoP inspiring but not dull.
  • And make sure that the admission panel sees your potential and curiosity about your chosen field.

Your letters of recommendation must recommend you and not make flowery praises. These letters are also your character certificate and are essential to credit your ardent aspiration towards your field.

Step 4 - Scholarship Application

Studying in a foreign country is undeniably expensive, of course. To mitigate extra expenses, make a draft plan of your budget. Before this selection, you may also be required to show your financial capability to be accepted into the foreign program. In this application, too, you are required to convince the scholarship provider of your interest and potential benefits in your chosen field.

Step 5 - Student Visa

After your selection, you must also apply for a study permit or a student visa to study in Canada. Following the completion of your course of 1 or 2 years, you can also obtain a post-study work permit (PSWP) to live and work in Canada for 2 or more years, or you may extend it to Permanent Residency.
