There are multiple types of visas through which dependents can join their family members in the UK. Here’s a breakdown of the most common categories -
1. PBS Dependant Visas
The Points-Based System (PBS) allows dependents—spouses, partners, and children of certain visa holders (like Skilled Worker, Global Talent, and Innovator Founder visa holders) to live in the UK. Dependants may study and work (with some restrictions) but cannot access public funds. The visa duration typically aligns with the main applicant’s visa.
2. Student Visa Dependents
As per the UK student dependent visa new rules, from January 1, 2024, only students enrolled in PhD programs or research-based postgraduate courses (RQF Level 8 or higher) are allowed to bring dependents. Eligible dependents can work and study in the UK but must meet specific UK dependant visa requirements.
3. Adult Dependant Relative (ADR) Visa
This visa is available for elderly parents or close relatives requiring long-term care that cannot be provided in their home country. It's one of the most difficult visas to qualify for due to strict criteria and a high proof burden.
