There are two major types of Post-Study Work (PSW) visas for students who want to prolong their stay in Australia and desire to work in an occupation of their choice. 

**Skilled Recognised Graduate Visa (Subclass 476)**

This visa is for students who have attained a degree in Engineering from any specified institution in Australia. This visa will grant you to live, work, and study in Australia for up to 18 months. To apply for this visa, you must fulfil the following requirements:

- a degree in Engineering from an institution registered through CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students) in the last 2 years
- must be under 31 years of age
- must not be a previous holder of 476 visas or 485 visa
- must meet the health and character requirements
- Must have the required score in English proficiency exams or a passport holder from the UK, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, and the US.

This visa processing may take up to **8 months to 18 months**. The fee starts from **AUD 405.**

**Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)**

This visa can be further divided into two categories:

**A. Graduate Work Stream**-
This visa allows international students to live, study, and work in Australia temporarily for 18 months. Recent graduates with specific skills and qualifications can apply for this visa. To be eligible for this visa, you must fulfil the following requirements:

must be the holder of a suitable student visa in the last 6 months
must be qualified for a relevant occupation in the skilled occupation list of the Australian government
be under 50 years of age
appeared for a skills assessment in your nominated occupation on the professional occupation list
meet adequate health requirements for all applicants while applying
proof of an AFP (Australian Police Check) while applying
evidence of the required level of English with the application

The visa processing may take 9 months to 13 months, and the fee starts from AUD 1,680. With this visa, you can also bring your immediate family members with you.

**B. Post-Graduate Work Stream**- 
This visa allows international students who have recently graduated from an Australian institution to live, work and study in Australia temporarily. You can stay in Australia for 2 to 4 years, depending on your qualifications. 

To be eligible for this visa, you must fulfil the following requirements:

1. must be under 50 years of age
2. must be the holder of a suitable student visa in the last 6 months
3. must be qualified for a relevant occupation in the skilled occupation list of the Australian government
4. must be a recent degree holder in a CRICOS-registered course
5. appeared for a skills assessment in your nominated occupation on the professional occupation list
6. meet adequate health and character requirements for all applicants while applying
7. proof of an AFP (Australian Police Check) while applying
8. evidence of the required level of English with the application

The visa processing may take **8 months to 10 months**, and the fee starts from **AUD 1,680**. With this visa, you can also bring your immediate family members with you.


Types of Post-Study Visa

Permanent Residency should not be confused with Australian citizenship. To hold a PR in Australia essentially means that you can live and work there and be granted most rights and entitlements. **Skilled Recognised Graduate Visa (Subclass 476)**

**Optional Practical Training**

If you're already a holder of an F1 visa in the USA, half of your work is done. This USA visa will allow you to work after graduation for up to one year or 12 months. If you have graduated with a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) degree, you will be permitted to stay and work in the USA for 36 months. Furthermore, you have two choices while applying for an OPT. One is either a Pre-Completion OPT or a Post-Completion OPT.  

The **pre-completion OPT** is for students who are working and studying at the same time. So they could still be attending classes and working. You can only apply for your pre-completion OPT if you are enrolled in school for one full academic year. If approved, you are only allowed to work part-time for **20 hours per week** during semesters. During breaks or holidays, you are permitted to work full time. 

At the same time, you can apply for the **post-completion OPT** after your graduation.  However, if you have done a pre-completion OPT for some time, it will be deducted from your post-completion OPT. 

Eligibility:

To apply for OPT, applicants must fulfil the following criteria:

- Possess a valid F-1 visa;
- Enrolled as a student in a recognized U.S. educational institution;
- Must be in school for at least 1 academic year;
- Must work part-time if applying for a pre-completion OPT;
- Must work in a field relevant to your degree
- No criminal record during your time in the U.S.;
- Eligible for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD);
- Must not have completed a 12-month full-time Curricular Practical Training (CPT);
- Must not be enrolled in the English as a Second Language course.

What are my Post-Study Stay Back Options in the USA?

This visa is for non-immigrants who wish to pursue a work permit in the USA. Many students start with an OPT extension on their F1 visa and eventually apply for an H1-B visa to increase their work experience in the USA for a more extended period. This is essentially a work visa in the USA that allows you to stay back in the country for up to 3 years. There is also a possibility to extend this stay up to a total of 6 years. However, this work permit in the USA must be sponsored by your employer. Furthermore, this visa has a cap of 65,000 visas per year. 

This visa is also called a Specialty Occupations Visa; applicants must have special knowledge in the field where they wish to work. 

Eligibility:

H1-B Visa

Your Comprehensive Guide to Post-Study Stay Back Options & Permanent Residency in the USA

Before you apply for student visa to Canada, also called study permit, you need an acceptance letter from a school approved by a provincial or territorial government to host international students, also called Designated Learning Institution (DLI).

This is especially helpful for an international student like you to ensure that you get into an accredited institution and not some phony school that sells worthless college diplomas and transcripts.

Getting back to the topic, you will be required to mention the DLI number of the school in your study permit application form.

Check http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/study-institutions-list.asp to find out if your school is listed as a DLI.

You must also:

- have a valid passport
- provide proof that you have enough money to pay for your tuition and living expenses and that you can afford return tickets to your home country
- have a report of good health – read below about medical examination, and
- convince an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your studies

Before you apply

The process to acquire a student visa for Canada can be simple and hassle-free.

Here is a list of steps to help you apply for a visa on your own through the Government of Canada Immigration website.

Create an account or Sign in if you already have an account at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/e-services/account.asp. With this account you can apply for visa online, pay the visa fee and check the status of your visa application.
You would be asked a few questions. Go ahead and answer about what you would like to study, for how long and other details about your background. After submitting these answers you will get an email with your login and password.
Login to your account at the secure Government of Canada’s online service, called GCKey with the login and password that you receive in an email.
Upload all the documents that have been requested.
Pay the visa fee from your account. For Indian students, this fee amount is CAN$150 (~Rs 7,400).
You can track the status of your visa application from your account.
Your visa will take around 6-8 weeks.

How to apply offline through VAC?


The checklist below should be used in conjunction with the IMM 5483 Document Checklist for a Study Permit.

Failure to submit all required documentation, or the provision of any false statement or submission of fraudulent documents may result in the refusal of your visa or delay the processing time.

A medical exam is required for a study program that exceeds 6 months.

When submitting your completed and signed application form, be sure to include the barcode page.

The following documents are required to apply for your visa for general university programs (i.e. non-SPP):

- Original passport that is valid for the duration of proposed study
- 2 passport sized photographs (size 35mm width and 45mm height with a white background and be taken in the past six months)
- Study permit questionnaire
- Letter of acceptance from your school stating that you’ve got unconditional admission along with program, degree, duration and start date of study
- Application Forms
- IELTS Test Results from within last 24 months with overall band not less than 6.0 bands with no bands less than 5.5
- Photocopies of the most recent education qualifications along with all the individual mark sheets
- Copy of payment receipts issued by Canadian Educational Institution. Pre-payment of first semester fees or amount as mentioned in the offer letter is mandatory.
- Copy of Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAD $ 10,000 (Recommended)
- Copy of proof of completion of Medical Examination
- For proof of availability of funds to cover living expenses of first year in Canada, apart from GIC, a student may show an Education Loan from an Approved Bank
- If your sponsor has personal funds or savings then the bank statements with the transaction history of at least 3 months should be included when filing for visa
- Form 16, in case you have been working, or Income Tax Return documents of the Sponsor should be included as well
- Do not provide any additional documents unless these are requested by a Visa Officer.

Application for a Canada Study Permit: Generic checklist


You will need to get a medical examination done by visiting one of the Designated Medical Practitioners in India.

The medical examination cannot be performed by the personal family physician of the student.

Under SPP it is mandatory to complete a medical examination prior to submission of the visa application.

However, under the University/Generic Category, it is advised to complete it in advance to hasten the visa processing time.

Documents to be carried to the Medical Test Venue:

- 5 recent passport sized photographs with white background
- Your passport
- Offer letter from your school in Canada
- The Medical Report form. Only required if you are not undergoing an up-front medical exam. This form will be sent by the visa officer to the student
- Note: It is important that the doctor is informed about any previous or existing medical conditions. If this is not done, processing the medical exam could take longer. Medical results are valid for one year

Medical Examination


You need to answer the following questions and submit these along with your visa application:

1. Disclose the name of the agent or representative who assisted you with your admission forms and study permit application. Failure to disclose an agent or representative could negatively affect the decision on your study permit application.
2. Provide the details of your education and work experience since the age of 18. Start with the most recent information. Under “Activity” write your course of study or the details of your job if you were working. If you were not working or studying, provide information on what you were doing. For example: unemployed, traveling, etc. DO NOT leave any gaps.
3. Complete the following chart with regard to a) your parents and b) any other individual, including yourself, who is a primary financial support for your program of studies, wherever applicable.
4. If your course of study includes English as a second language (ESL) component, please explain how long it will take to complete English as a second language (ESL) requirement and how much it will cost.

**When should I apply for my study permit?**

You should apply as soon as you receive your letter of acceptance.

We strongly recommend that you submit your application at least three months ahead of your proposed date of travel.

Applications that are received after 01 April for May entry, after 01 August for September entry and after 01 December for January entry will not normally be processed in time for the start of classes and may be refused.

**What are the documents I need to submit along with my visa application?** 
You need to submit the following documents (there is more information in the Visa Application Process section of the website):

- Application Form
- Family Information Form
- Study Permit Questionnaire (along with checklist)
- VFS Consent Form
- Use of Representative Form (If applicable)

I am an international student in Canada. Can I work while studying?
Yes, you are eligible to work in Canada, while you are studying as well as after you graduate. As a study permit (i.e. student visa) holder, you can work on-campus or off-campus without an additional work permit.

**Working on-campus:**

- You would need a Social Insurance Number (SIN) to work in Canada. There is no fee for it and you just need to have mentioned on your study permit that you accept employment on the campus. Even if it’s not mentioned, you can get it added later
- “On-campus” refers to all the buildings on your school campus, including other campuses of your school, if any
- Your on-campus employer could be your school, faculty members, student organization, a private business or a contractor, or you may also be self-employed

**Working off-campus:**

- You would need a Social Insurance Number (SIN)
- You may work 20 hrs. per week off-campus, or full-time during regular breaks, such as the winter and summer holidays or spring break
- There are several requirements and restrictions for working on-campus or off-campus, check on http://www.cic.gc.ca website, and you must abide by these rules.

If your program includes an essential co-op or internship component, you will need to apply for a work permit.

You may also apply for a post-graduation work permit to continue working in Canada after you graduate from an eligible institution.

**I am an international student. Can I return home or travel outside Canada during my studies?**

Yes. Along with your student permit, you would need a temporary resident visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).

I want to change my school or program. How can I change my study permit?
You may change your school, program, field of study or level of study (e.g. from the Bachelor level to the Masters level) without applying for a new study permit. You do not need to apply for a change to the condition of your study permit, either.

You may continue to use your study permit as long as it is valid.

**What is GCKey?**

1. Tuition Fees Invoice (proof of 1st Installment payment)
2. All Academic original Documents (Preferably carry 2 sets of Xerox copies of all documents)
3. Bank Cover letter (Amount should be shown in Student Savings Account for Rs. 8 Lakhs to 8.5 Lakhs) for one-year studies and Rs.15 to 15.5 Lakhs for 2 years (In case of dependent travelling, an additional amount of 4.5 Lakhs for a 1-year program and 8.5 Lakhs for a 2-year program should be shown in your savings account
4. Bank Statement for the past six months or from the date the account was opened. A new account will also be accepted but it needs to be a student account
5. IELTS or TOEFL (If applicable)
6. Health insurance is necessary for students in 1-year master’s programs, but is not required for those in 2-year programs. Some universities provide their own insurance, and it would be wise to drop them an email to check whether this is the case.
7. Admission Letter
8. Scholarship Letter (If any)
9. Passport (Valid passport – Pages 1, 2 and the last page are especially important)

Due to some problems experienced by Swedish universities last autumn, they have recommend that students attend the mandatory students registration meeting this academic year. Individual Universities have a last date to register programmes/courses and after the deadline they will not be allowed to register, no matter what the reason may be. The dates and related information will be available on the websites of the universities.

As there is a noted increase in the number of married students, most of whom are female, only student accommodation for the admitted student is provided. According to the rules, family members are not allowed to stay in the student accommodation. Furthermore, children are not allowed to attend classes according to the Regulations. Students have to seek out daycare for the children before they start their program

 If the admitted student is married, they recommend that the student arrives, register and start their program. Once the admitted student has arranged accommodation and daycare for the children, the husband/wife and/or children can arrive.

 The Universities have an introduction week for all international students. The week is organized to help international students and will comprise academic activities (information about studies, courses in study technique, academic writing, and programming) and also provide practical information about living in Sweden.

What is the cost of a Swedish Student Visa?

A bill has been re-introduced in the House of Representatives that seeks exemption for foreign-born persons with an American PhD in science, technology, engineering or mathematics from the limits on the number of employment-based green cards and H-1B visas awarded annually.

Introduced by Congressmen Erik Paulsen and Mike Quigley, the Stopping Trained in America PhDs from Leaving the Economy (STAPLE) Act, is likely to benefit Indians given that they constitute the largest number of students doing PhD in the US.
“It is no surprise that the brightest minds from around the world come to the United States to pursue their advanced degrees, and we should be doing all we can to ensure students we educate and train here use what they’ve learned to contribute to the American economy,” said Congressman Erik Paulsen.

“With thousands of high-skilled jobs going unfilled, the STAPLE Act makes sure American companies are getting the talent they need. By stapling a green card or (a) visa to their diplomas, these professionals can invent and innovate new discoveries that grow our economy,” Paulsen said.

Quigley, in his remarks, said if the US was serious about fostering innovation, spurring economic activity, and staying competitive in the global marketplace, it must encourage the brightest minds in the world to study, work, and stay in its communities.

“We cannot advance our technology or research if we continue sending foreign-born, but US educated, students with advanced degrees away,” he said.

Noting that the H-1B visas are subject to annual caps that are woefully short of the number necessary to fill high-skilled jobs, the two lawmakers in a statement said numerous studies have found that H-1B visas correspond with an increase in jobs for native citizens.

“For example, a 2011 American Enterprise Institute study found that an additional 100 foreign-born workers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics) fields with advanced degrees from US universities is associated with an additional 262 jobs among US natives,” they said.

Last month, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order for tightening the rules of the H-1B visa programme to stop “visa abuses”.

Trump said his administration is going to enforce ‘Hire American’ rules that are designed to protect jobs and wages of workers in the US.

The executive order also called upon the Departments of Labour, Justice, Homeland Security, and State to take action against fraud and abuse of our visa programs.

The Stopping Trained in America PhDs from Leaving the Economy (STAPLE) Act, which has been recently reintroduced, is likely to benefit Indians.
